Yes, you read that correctly. It’s Naan Pizza made by Tandoor Chef. Savory Indian naan bread and pizza unexpectedly make such a great combo. If you love Naan bread, you’ll love these pizzas!

These pizzas are all natural, vegetarian, hand-stretched, and fired in a real Tandoor oven for authentic flavor. They are also shaped like Naan bread and fit easily in your hand. I really enjoy vegetarian pizzas so I was super excited to try Naan Pizza.

Tandoor Chef sent me these 4 pizzas to review – Margherita, Roasted Eggplant, Spinach and Paneer Cheese, and Cilantro Pesto. They dare to fuse Indian and Italian flavors together.

Margherita – This had great flavor with a sweet and mildly spicy tomato sauce to back it up. If you love Margherita pizza, which traditionally has tomatoes, basil, and white cheese, then you’ll love this Naan pizza.

Roasted Eggplant – At first, I had low expectations for this flavor, although I love eggplant. Eggplant on pizza is not a popular topping. To my surprise, it was love at first bite! The eggplant on this pizza is like an eggplant cutlet with crunchy breading. Even my husband, who hates eggplant, really enjoyed this. I would definitely buy this in the store.

Spinach and Paneer Cheese – Paneer cheese is a common cheese in South Asian cuisine. It’s a meaty cheese, usually cubed in Indian food. This flavor tasted quite similar to the Margherita pizza because they both have the same sweet and spicy sauce. It was good but not memorable. I couldn’t really taste the paneer cheese.

Cilantro Pesto – This was probably my least favorite flavor. The pesto and cilantro flavors were faint.

Naan pizzas are frozen and heat up quickly in about 12 minutes in the oven. One pizza feeds one person. Look out for it at Whole Foods or your local, natural grocery store.

I will be stocking up on the Margherita and Roasted Eggplant Naan Pizzas. It’s a nice change from the usual vegetarian pizzas I get.

I was so excited to attend the Fancy Food Show in San Francisco’s Moscone Center for the 3rd time! The Fancy Food Show is an international gourmet food show where food companies debut their newest products before it reaches stores. The show is also a venue for food companies seeking distribution in grocery stores and restaurants.

I went on Sunday with my husband. This time I felt a little more prepared and less overwhelmed.

I have grouped my posts according to different categories – ethnic foods, tea, drinks, and snacks. Brace yourselves, this is the 1st of 2 posts about the Fancy Food Show. Enjoy!

With the Bolani people

East & West Gourmet Afghan Food, a family owned business, makes awesome Bolani. This is their first Fancy Food Show! What is Bolani? It’s an all natural, thin flatbread, folded in half with a vegetable filling. Bolani is low calorie, low carb, low fat, and low sodium. Yet it’s high in flavor and completely satisfying. My favorite Bolani fillings are spinach and pumpkin.

Bolani and Sauce

You can toast them up in the toaster or a pan. They have a wide array of sauces to go with the Bolani. My faves are garlic mint cheese, lentil curry, and sweet jalapeno. So delicious, healthy, easy-to-digest, and even vegetarian! You can find them on Saturdays at the Alemany Farmer’s Market and on Thursdays at the Serramonte Farmer’s Market and the Crocker Galleria Farmer’s Market. Whole Foods and Andronico’s also carries bolani.

With Dalbir Singh of Sukhi’s Gourmet Indian Cuisine

My husband and I were standing in front of Sukhi’s Gourmet Indian Cuisine booth, our favorite booth for “lunch” at the Fancy Food Show. All of a sudden, we hear someone say, “Hey, it’s the YummySF guys!” It turned out to be Dalbir Singh, Sukhi’s son and official taste tester of Sukhi’s Gourmet Indian Cuisine. Official taste tester? Where can I get a job like that? He took care of us. Thanks, Dalbir!

Sukhi’s biriyani, chutney, and chickpeas

Their newest product is Biriyani (Indian fried rice) and chicken samosa. I was introduced to samosas over 10 years ago and have never seen anyone do chicken samosas before! Although I did wish it in my mind. Super delish! Usually, samosas have a potato filling.

Sukhi’s chutneys

They also have a wide array of chutneys, curry paste, spice mixes, naanwich, and frozen entrees. Sukhi’s has options for those who cook and for those who only use the microwave. So there’s no excuse not to try her food.

Sukhi’s Indian food is authenticly delicious and amazing! It’s like having Sukhi cook for you. What I really like about Sukih’s food is that it’s tasty, yet not overwhelmingly spicy. Find her line at your local Whole Foods or natural food store. Last year, I met Sukhi Singh, owner of Sukhi’s Gourmet Indian Cuisine, at the Fancy Food Show 2009.

GreeNoodle

I was pleasantly surprised with GreeNoodle. It’s an organic, instant ramen noodle made with Moroheiya, a healthy green vegetable. This vegetable, also known as Mallow Leaves, Juete Mallow, and Jew’s Mallow, was the Egyptian queen Cleopatra’s beauty secret. Moroheiya has more Potassium, Calcium, Beta carotene, fiber, and vitamins than spinach, broccoli, and carrots.

Mr. Sho Oga, founder of GreeNoodle, was a typical employee working for a company in Japan. He had an inspiration to create a healthy food that was nutritious yet tasty. He ended up quitting his job and moving to Thailand to farm organic Moroheiya.

GreeNoodle doesn’t really taste like a vegetable but more like noodles. What a great way to feed vegetables to kids (and some adults) without them knowing it! Their noodles come packaged with tom yum soup, shiitake mushroom soup, or plain with no soup packet. This is a brand new product so look out for it in stores soon.

The Ginger People sweet chili garlic sauce fountain

Here is something you don’t see every day, a sweet chili garlic fountain! Salivating yet? It’s as equally delicious and full of flavor as it looks.

The Ginger People Cooking Sauces

The Ginger People have expanded from a humble line of tasty ginger chews – original and coffee flavor, to a full line of cooking sauces. Their Asian inspired sauces include spicy ginger teriyaki, Thai green curry, sweet ginger chili, and ginger lemon grass sauce. Check out their full line of ginger products.

With Ron Quesada of Ramar Foods International

We bumped into someone my husband knows, Ron Quesada of Ramar Foods International. His entire family works in the business.

Ramar Foods International, the flavor of the Philippines, carries several product lines of Filipino food. BestTaste is their line of frozen pork shumai (pork dumpling), siopao (pork bun), and lumpia (which they labeled “spring rolls” at the show, for those who don’t know what lumpia is). Frescano is their line of sausages – tocino, longanisa, and hamanado. Manila Gold is their line of juices – calamansi (small Filipino lime), mango, and dalandan (sweet citrus fruit).

Magnolia ice cream

Perhaps their most famous line is Magnolia ice cream. They make traditional Asian flavors such as ube (purple yam), mango, coconut, red bean, green tea, and halo-halo (fruit mix). You can find Ramar Food International products at your local Asian grocery store, such as Ranch 99.

With Stephanie of Lick My Spoon

Towards the end of the day, I bumped into fellow food blogger, Stephanie, of Lick My Spoon. I love her T-shirt. Maybe we’ll do YummySF T-shirts next year. Anyone else interested in YummySF T-shirts?

This year the Fancy Food Show returned to San Francisco, finally, after showing in San Diego as their only California stop last year. There were so many great food products, teas, drinks, and snacks.

Dave’s Gourmet pasta sauces are made with gourmet ingredients like heirloom tomatoes and wild mushrooms. What a unique idea! Dave’s Red Heirloom pasta sauce, which is slightly sweet but also lower in sodium than other sauces, is the only marinara sauce that my husband and I both love. He uses it as a dipping sauce for chicken nuggets while I use it for pasta.

Costco is the most inexpensive place to buy Dave’s Gourmet sauces. But they only carry 1 out of 4 flavors, the Red Heirloom. I sampled the Wild Mushroom flavor at the show and it is delicious!

Here is me with Dave himself.

Field Roast makes these savory vegan sausages. Their apple sage sausage tastes almost like chicken apple sausage. Field Roast also has a line of hearty, meatless roasts.

Sukhi’s has always been one of my favorite brands of prepared Indian foods. Sukhi’s masala noodles are my favorite. She has now come out with a new line of frozen meals as well as naan sandwiches.

Here is Sukhi and me. Her entire family helps her with her successful, growing business.

Sweetwater Spice Company has brine concentrates that brines up to 5 pounds of mouthwatering, juicy meat. I’m not kidding about it being juicy. The juice literally “drips” off the meat. Sweetwater Spice Company’s brine concentrates come in 4 flavors – BBQ Bath, Fajita Bath, Brisket Bath, and Turkey Bath. Stay tuned for part two of my experience at the Fancy Food Show 2009.

Bombay Garden in Santa Clara is hands down my favorite Indian restaurant. It is a little drive but believe me, it’s worth it! On weekends, they have a wonderful buffet lunch with 35 – 40 items. For a period of time, my husband and I went to Bombay Garden’s Indian buffet once a week for 6 weeks straight.I like the buffet because it lets me try out different entrees that I normally wouldn’t be able to if I ordered off a menu. Fresh naan bread is brought to your table with unlimited refills. Fountain drinks are included in the price as well as all you can drink chai, my favorite tea.

The buffet is set up in 3 sections. One section is for salads, fruits, and sauces. The main section is for Northern Indian food which includes basmati rice pilaf, Tandori chicken, egg curry, lamb sausage, dal makhani (lentil soup), chicken masala, saag paneer (yogurt based, spinach dish with paneer cheese), etc. My favorite dish in this section is navratan korma which is a yellow, cream based, vegetable dish. Everyone that I’ve told, who has tried it, loves it.In the third section they have Southern Indian food is which mainly fried dishes with some soups. My favorite dessert is here. It’s called kheer, which is a yummy rice pudding. Mmmmm…. Then they have a mango ice cream machine.

The buffet price used to be under $10. Can you believe that? Now it is around $12 a person which is still affordable. Bombay Garden has many locations around the Bay Area, basically one restaurant on every bay – North Bay, Peninsula, South Bay, and East Bay. I have tried the San Mateo location, but was disappointed. Santa Clara is the one to go to.

I had the pleasure of meeting Judy Creighton at the show. She is an instructor at The Cheese School of San Francisco, which is dedicated to the enjoyment and appreciation of cheese. Fondue, Cheese of Italy, and The Art of the Cheese Tray are just some of the classes offered by The Cheese School.

What a treat it was that the owners of these companies were there, the ones who started it all with an idea that blossomed into something amazing. This is Alice Larse (left) of the award winning Alice’s Stick Cookies. (She started Alice’s Stick Cookies in 1999, when she was 70 years old!) I had a misconception that these were biscottis because they are always placed next to the biscottis in the gourmet food stores. But these are shortbread cookies, shaped long and thin like biscottis. I sampled the vanilla flavor and it was delicious!

Last but not least, is Sukhi’s Indian cooking products. I love her heat-and-serve Masala Noodles that I found in the prepared foods section of Mollie Stone’s. She now has a line of one step cooking products. Just add meat, cream, and water, then simmer and serve. Nice! I like things that are easy and quick.
