While you are at the Union Lumber Company Store enjoying Living Light Foods and Mendo Bistro, check out the Mendocino Cookie Company. This family owned business features a unique selection of freshly baked, gourmet cookies.

You can find Double Fudge Chocolate Brownie, Semi Sweet Chocolate Walnut, Grandma Daisy’s Shortbread, Chocolate Shortbread with Chocolate Chips, White Chocolate Almond, Ginger Spice, and more! If that doesn’t make your mouth water… I don’t know what will!

My husband always buys a bunch of Choc-a-lot cookies, which is dark, milk, and white chocolate chips together in a cookie. What a cookie! I’ve never seen this kind of cookie anywhere. So get your cookie fix here. You can order off of the Mendocino Cookie Company website, if you can’t get to Fort Bragg. I might get a tin for my husband for Christmas. Shhhh…. don’t tell him!

Also, they feature Peerless coffee, espresso drinks, tea, and chai, and they have wi-fi.

Special Note: They offer Pumpkin Pie cookies from October to December! Locals eat enjoy them heated with ice cream for Thanksgiving instead for pumpkin pie. Also, if you want to order cookies that are not featured on their site (like Choc-a-lot), just select a cookie, scroll down to special instructions, and ask to substitute.

Mendo Bistro is my favorite restaurant in Fort Bragg. Freshly made pastas, hormone and antibiotic free meats, affordable entrees, and a beautiful view of the city are some of the reasons why Mendo Bistro is a favorite for locals and out-of-towners, like me.

My husband and I came last year for our honeymoon and had their out-of-this-world seafood cakes. I was disappointed when we returned for our one year anniversary that it was no longer on the menu. The menu is seasonal and changes from time to time. So if you see the seafood or crab cakes on their menu, get it while you can!

They have a wonderful selection of loose leaf teas. Our server suggested mixing chamomile with mint. I was intrigued with the idea of mixing tea, but mint tea is not my favorite. I kind of wished I ordered the vanilla tea like I did last year.

We started off with the soup of the day, a chickpea and tomato bisque, which was creamy and perfectly seasoned… a perfect way to begin our meal. Plus, their bread is warm, soft, and amazing! It was gone in minutes and they had to refill our bread basket.

I ordered the Duck Confit with Mushroom Risotto. This is my first time trying Duck Confit and it was simply delicious. The duck skin was perfectly crisp and I couldn’t get enough of it. The mushroom risotto was buttery and creamy. My husband kept sampling my risotto. He was a little envious.

My husband ordered from Mendo Bistro’s “Choice Menu”, where you choose an ingredient – chicken, beef, fish, tofu, or portobello mushroom, and then choose how it will be cooked and with what sauce. He chose the fish of the day, Ono, and had it grilled with ginger soy sauce on the side. He enjoyed the Ono with the sauce and got polenta instead of mashed potato.

The service was fabulous and our dinner was memorable. We will definitely return to Mendo Bistro whenever we are in Fort Bragg.

I just got back from beautiful Fort Bragg, CA for our first anniversary getaway. Fort Bragg is along the coast in Mendocino county, just 2 hours north of Santa Rosa. I will include all of the places we ate at. I love this little town.

First off, a great place for freshly made, boxed raw food meals is Living Light Cuisine Cafe, located inside the historic Company Store (a must see spot). It is an extension of Living Light Culinary Arts Institute, which is located upstairs from the cafe. Connected to the Living Light Cuisine Cafe is the Living Light Marketplace, where you can buy blenders, juicers, kitchen tools, water distillers as well as hard to find health foods like dried kombu.

I dropped by to pick up a box of zucchini angel hair pasta with marinara sauce and nori sushi rolls. I had these 2 entrees last year and couldn’t wait to cleanse myself again with these raw food dishes. If you’re on a low carb diet, you’ll love the zucchini angle hair pasta. The texture and curly shape of the zucchini actually tricks you into thinking you’re eating noodles.

The nori sushi rolls are made with absolutely no rice. They use thin strips of cucumber to fake the texture of rice. The sushi is made of “not tuna”, carrots, red bell peppers, spinach, and avocado and comes with a kombu seaweed salad. Doesn’t this look yummy and healthy?
