I was in the checkout line at Whole Foods in San Francisco, when I noticed that the man in front of me was purchasing a bunch of these Synergy Kombucha drinks, flavored with fruit juices like guava. Interesting! So I asked him how the Synergy Kombucha drinks tasted and if they were overly sweet. He highly recommended them and said that the Synergy Kombucha drinks are lightly sweetened, which is what I like to hear.
Kombucha (kom – boo – cha) tea is an ancient Chinese wonder tonic made from fermenting the Kombucha mushroom. The fermentation forms live active enzymes, probiotics, antioxidants, and organic acids that help balance the body, support the immune system, support digestion, and detoxify the liver. Anything that helps with digestion, helps balance your body. If you think about it, if you have poor digestion, even eating the healthiest food will not make you healthy because your body cannot break down the foods to utilize the vitamins and minerals.
I tried Synergy Kombucha, the Strawberry and Guava flavors, and drank a little bit at a time. You’re supposed to only drink 4 oz. at a time to begin with and drink lots of water too, to help flush out toxins. I felt a little swollen at first. When your body is detoxing, sometimes you feel worse before you get better, because your body is getting rid of the toxins. I drank 2 bottles over the course of a week and I did notice a difference.
How does it taste? Plain Kombucha tea tastes like carbonated vinegar. Synergy Kombucha drink is combined with fruit juices like guava, cranberry, and strawberry to make it more palatable. And the fruit juice does help it taste better but it still has a slight strong vinegar taste, not horrible though. Kombucha tea is an acquired taste.
Just a warning, Kombucha is naturally carbonated. When I drove my Kombucha drink home, it must have rolled around my car and got shaken up. 20 minutes after the Kombucha drink made it home, I then opened it and it came gushing out of the bottle and all over my table.
Some people ferment their own Kombucha drink, but if you don’t know how to do it right, mold can form and you can get really sick from drinking it. Also, drink Kombucha in moderation. Too much of it can make you sick and some people can’t drink it at all because they are allergic. Every body is different so listen to your body. I have read that it’s best to start out drinking 4 oz., twice a day. Then work up to 8 oz. of Kombucha, twice a day.
