Here is a story I read in SFGate about the popularity of the 20% off coupon for Rainbow Grocery. Basically, you can find these 20% off coupons, one for each month of the year, from the San Francisco AT&T Yellow Pages.
20% off for groceries is huge, especially in this economy! I save an average of $15 each time I go. That’s like getting $15 worth of free food. The restriction is that you can only use the coupon on Wednesdays and Thursdays. Believe me, these 2 days of the week are extremely busy at Rainbow Grocery, even in the morning. People are really taking advantage of this valuable coupon.
I have gone as early as 9:08am, which I think is early since Rainbow opens at 9am, but still could not get a space in the free lot attached to Rainbow Grocery. Ridiculous! I was maybe the 5th car waiting for a space in the lot and I figured that most people already started shopping at 9am and they wouldn’t be finished for awhile.
So I devised a strategy. I park a block or 2 away and bring my collapsible handcart, which allows me to haul my groceries easily to my car. You can get these carts at Office Depot, Staples, or Amazon
. With this indispensible handcart, I no longer have to be cautious about buying heavy items that I cannot carry back to my car.
What I love about Rainbow Grocery is that they have a best selection of bulk food items, herbs, and teas, the most I have ever seen in any store! You can get hard-to-find items such as bulk organic raspberry leaf tea, dried burdock root, saffron rice, organic goji berries, dried soup mix, wide variety of cooking oils, kombu seaweed, inka coffee substitute, wide selection of rice, pasta, and flours, etc. When you buy from bulk containers, you can choose the amount you need, use your own containers to store them, which leaves less waste, and most importantly saves you money! Bring your own bags and save 10 cents.
All the fresh produce at Rainbow Grocery is organic and from local farms. I always grab some organic kale, beets, and apples. FYI, they do not sell any meat products of any kind.
