Grocery Outlet in Redwood City

April 14th, 2009 by Fanny

After learning about the Grocery Outlet, I was eager to check it out. The Grocery Outlet is also known as “The Dented Can Store” because it is the Ross (Dress for Less) of grocery products. Cans that have been dented, overstock items, and food products close to expiration end up here.

It’s true that when you go, you don’t know what you’re going to find, brand-wise. It’s like a box of chocolates. What they do have is lots of low priced wine, canned goods – anything from pasta sauce to canned fruit, frozen foods like Amy’s entrees, an assortment of coffee and tea, snacks like chips and protein bars, a limited variety fresh produce, condiments, a processed meat section with sausages and luncheon meat, dairy and cheese, and conventional and organic bath and body products.

If you want to shop here and save money, you have to keep an open mind. The Grocery Outlet will not replace your regular supermarket and you can’t really shop with your grocery list because you don’t know what the selection will be. This is the kind of place where you have to keep your eyes open to see what there is. At the same time you have to check expiration dates on everything. This was tedious to me. I did find a few items that were past the expiration date.

So what did I score? Luna tea cakes for 59 cents, Brent and Sam’s chocolate chip cookies which were half off, Intellgient Nutrients organic orange-spice white tea, canned grapefruit, and Jason organic shampoo which was half off. I stuck mostly with brands that I am familiar with. The Grocery Outlet is a great place to find discounted organic bath products such as body wash, hand soap, shampoo, and hair care products. But it may be a challenge to find matching shampoo and conditioner.

I don’t know if I will return to The Grocery Outlet often. I felt exhausted being there, maybe due to the dim lighting and the fact that you have to check everything before you buy it.  I was a little disappointed because there were a lot of processed foods here and I don’t buy a lot of processed foods. If you buy a lot canned foods and frozen processed foods, then this is the place for you. If you are on an extremely tight budget then you will find great deals here.
